Driven by strong consumer demand, coupled with early shipments by shippers in response to possible strikes at eastern and Gulf Coast ports, the Port of Long Beach's container throughput in September and the third quarter both hit record highs. This encouraging performance once again underscores the Port of Long Beach's position as an important gateway to the U.S. West Coast.
According to statistics, the Port of Long Beach handled a record 829,499 standard containers (TEUs) in September this year, a slight increase of 70 TEUs from the same month last year. Notably, this is the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year growth for the port, demonstrating strong growth momentum.
Specifically, imports increased by 2% to 416,999 TEUs; exports decreased by 12.8% to 88,289 TEUs; and the number of empty containers increased by 1.5% to 324,211. These data reflect the complexity of the current international trade situation, strong demand for imports, while exports face some pressure.
Total throughput for the third quarter reached 2,625,747 TEUs, 78,628 TEUs more than the record set in the second quarter of 2022. This achievement demonstrates the Port of Long Beach's ability to handle peak cargo flows.
Port management is optimistic. In a press release, a senior executive noted, "With the peak shipping season upon us, we are seeing record volumes of cargo passing through this key gateway for trans-Pacific trade, and our terminals continue to have ample capacity to handle it. Looking ahead, we expect the growth momentum to continue for the remainder of the year as retailers stock up for the upcoming winter holidays."
In the first three quarters of 2024, the Port of Long Beach's container traffic totaled 6,917,373 TEUs, a year-over-year increase of 18.81 TP3T, according to the data. This growth trend not only reflects the recovery of the U.S. economy, but also underscores the Port of Long Beach's important position in the global supply chain.
